How to Share Your Screen During an Online Session

During sessions, it can be useful to share your screen with the other session participant to share resources and materials. This article reviews how to share your screen using the screen share board in the online classroom.

Note: Screen Sharing is not supported on the Safari web browser.

To start sharing the screen, the instructor will need to navigate to the screen share board by clicking the icon shown above. 

Session participants can share their screen by clicking the blue "Share My Screen" button at the top of the screen share page.

The user will be presented with several options for sharing. 

  1. "Your Entire Screen"
  2. "Application Window"
  3. "Browser Tab"

Note: The sharing options, terms, and process used may vary slightly depending on the web browser being used for the online session.

Choose one of the options presented, by clicking on the desired option.

Then select the screen, window, or tab within the pop-up window and press "Share". 
The images below show the process for sharing the entire screen.  You'll notice that within the window, the screen needs to be selected before the "Share" button becomes active.

When sharing the screen, the person sharing may not be able to view the other session participant while they are navigating to other windows, applications, or browser tabs. 

If you prefer to see the other participant while sharing your screen, we recommend using the "Application Window" or the "Browser Tab" option to share your screen. Once you are sharing your screen, click on the tab you'd like to share and drag it away from the other tabs in that window. Once it has separated, resize the window until it fits in the screen share area of the online classroom - next to the video of the other participant.
The process described above is demonstrated in the video embedded at the top of this article. 

To end the screen share, click the blue "Stop Sharing My Screen" button at the top of the screen share board.

The browser may also display a similar button to "Stop Sharing" located at the bottom of your screen.
